BBSA Coaches Spotlight: Barun Wakhley
Why did you choose to work with the Bhutan Baseball and Softball Association?
Call it a coincidence, but initially I was asked to do some sessions with kids from Thimphu Baseball Club and that’s how it started. Everything started on a voluntary basis.
What life experiences helped shape your decision to coach youth?
The biggest challenge was not knowing much about the game. I had to go through a lot of online courses and watch a lot of videos on baseball so I would know about the game itself. I began to fall in love with the game and I love training with the kids.
What do you find is the most challenging aspect of the game of baseball?
The biggest challenge would be dealing with the kids since we have to start from the basics. The game is new in the country, unlike other sports, and teaching the kids the rules of baseball is not easy.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a youth coach?
Being around these innocent kids and talking to them is where I see the reflection of my own childhood days and what I had missed. The training sessions are always great with the kids and it’s just amazing.
